Review: My Name is Mary Sutter

My Name is Mary Sutter
My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I really had to force myself to finish this book and am not sure why I bothered. When I get really into a book I FLY through it, so it should say something that I had to renew this one twice. I think the main problem I had with this book was that it felt too much like reading for history class. But I suppose that's what historical fiction is supposed to be like ...

Mary Sutter's story is really interesting, but it is interspersed with snippets from the perspectives of Dorothea Dix, Abraham Lincoln, and other civil war figures. I got lost in battle descriptions and many times found myself reading the same paragraph over and over again. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who doesn't LOVE United States history.

Review: No Angel

No Angel
No Angel by Penny Vincenzi

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this story and the characters, but I don't know if I enjoyed it enough to bother with the rest of the trilogy. We'll see; I have a pretty long "to read" list at the moment, and they definitely don't make the top five.

Unfortunately, for a book centered around a family entrenched in the publishing world, it didn't have a very good editor. Misspelled words, missing punctuation, uncapitalized words, incorrect pronouns (he instead of she?!); it drove me mad!! The previous reader (I got the book from the library) had actually corrected several of the mistakes. I am tempted to read the book again just to fix the rest.

Review: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society

I recently decided that what little free time I have should be used for something other than mindless computer games and television, so I got a library card and sought recommendations from friends.  Then I joined Goodreads, because I like to join websites and then forget about them after a week.

Anyways, I wrote a silly review.  Keep in mind I did not go into the book reviewing business for a reason.

Such a sweet story. Took me a bit to get into because of the format - it's written entirely as letters to and from various characters. I stuck it out though, because it was recommended by a friend. So glad I did; I got completely sucked in and found myself laughing out loud one minute and misty-eyed the next.
